Thanlyin, formerly (syriam )was the capital of lower Burma, Philip de Brito Nicote, a former ship’s Carbin –boy declared himself King of lower Burma in 1603. Interesting places are Kyaikkauk Pagoda and Kyaikmawwin Pagoda.  more >>


 

The Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda is the main tourist attraction; in Kyaikhto Town - ship Mon State, and revered by Buddhist all over the Country. King of devas took a huge boulder, 17 feet in height and 52 feet in girth that looked like the hermit’s cranium and put it on a projecting tabular rock, 83 feet in height and 55 feet in width. Bagan is one of the richest archaeological Sites in Asia, covers an area of 42 sq . km containing (3137) well – preserved pagodas and Temples from the 11th-13th Century. Mandalay, the classical name of the city is ‘ Ratana – Punja’. Founded and built by King Mindon in AD (1856-57). Mandalay was the most Myanmar of all cities and home of the most traditional Myanmar music and dance. Inlay lake located in the Southern Shan state is 900 metres above sea- level, with a population of Some 150, 000, many of whom live on stilt houses, on the lake proper. To survive, they became fisherman and developed their unique style of leg- rowing and Catching fish in Conical traps.  more >>

Nestling in the heart of the pine – studed shan Hills at ( 4,319 ft ) about ( 1,300 m ) above sea level is kalaw, a former British hill- resort left lying with Colonial – style houses. Hill- tribes people such as Pa-O, Palaung, Danu, Taungyo can be visited from Kalaw.  more >>

Some 42 miles ( 67 km ) northeast of Mandalay lies the hill station of Maymyo. Situated at around 3,500 ft ( roughly 1,100m ) above sea-level. Because of its pleasant cool climate ( and strawberries ) it served as a summer resort for the British government in Burma. Of principal interest are Maymyo’s vast Botanical Garden,  laid out by Sir Harcourt Butter, governor of Burma, establish in 1914.  more >>

Tachileik – Myanmar border and Mae- Sai Thai border is usually open from ( 6 am to 6 pm ) weekdays and until 9 pm on weekends and holidays. Most powerful Nats or Spirits live there; and if you go shooting you get nothing, unless you offer some of your breakfast as a peace offering to these spirits in the morning. It was created from a violent volcanic eruption way back in 442 BC to become the dwelling place of the gods. From the 4th to 11th centuries, every King had to make a pilgrimage here to consult the Spirits before his reign could begin.  more >>

A haw Sao pha ( Sawbwa in Myanmar ) or Shan Palace, can still be seen at the northern end of Hispaw. Other interesting places are Mahamyatmuni Phaya and Bawgyo Phaya. Hsipaw Large market is best in the morning when Shan and other tribal people from nearby villages come to trade.  more >>

 

Mingun has two remarkable landmarks, both projects of King Bodawpaya. The Mingun Bell and Pagoda, Mingun Bell is the Biggest uncracked bell – 14 times the size of that of St. Paul’s. The Mingun Pagoda was to have been the largest in the world ( at 492 ft high – 150m) as intended by the King. It would have been no less than 65ft taller than the vast Chedi at Nakhon Pathom in Thailand.  more >>

West of Pathein, on the Bay of Bengal Coast, Chaungtha Beach has recently opened to foreign tourists. At low tide the very wide beach has a touch of the “ muddy delta” look, but overall at medium and high tide it is attractive enough, with fine, beige sand, backed by coconut plants and casuarina trees.  more >>

One hours off the Lashio beyond Wetwun village ( 15 miles / 24 km ) southeast of Maymyo is the Peik Chin Myaung Caves. The caves was originally formed from rock rifts. The rock are lime stone rock. The cave abounds in Buddha images, many neon, and one stupa. There are also statues depicting various tales from the life of the Buddha. It is now being frequented by numerous pilgrims.  more >>

 

Sittwe ( AKYAB ) – Known to the Bengalis as Akyab and to the Rakhine as Saitway, this part city of the Rakhine state sits at the mouth of the Kaladan River where it empties into the Bay of Bengal. During the British era, international trade along the coast bloomed. Each day, two huge cargo steamers plied back and foth between Calcutta and Sittwe.  more >>

 

Unlike Bagan, Where temple ruins are strewn over a vast plain, the ruins of Mrauk U Sit on or against bluffs. In hilly terrair interlaced with streams and leafy trees. In addition to the major sites located one or 2km north-east of town, there are lots of crumbling stupas next to the town itself, especially on hillocks along the stream at the Southern end of town, a very nice area for Sunrise or Sunset strolls.  more >>

Walls and gateways of Sandstone blocks and earth are all that’s left of Mrauk U Royal palace, Constructed in 1430 according to some Sources, as late 1553 according to others. A Portuguse Monk and envoy to Mrauk U described the palace as it appeared during his visit in the 1630s.

The Rakhine Yoma ( Arakan Range ) Separates the Rakhine and Chin States from the Central Ayeyarwady ( Irrawaddy ) River plains. Although the first inhabitants of the region were a dark skinned Negrito tribe known as the Bilu, developed the first christian millenium. Nearly a quarter of Myanmar’s geographic area is occupied by the Shan State. It’s the most mountainous state in the country, divided down the middle by the huge north – South Thanlwin(Salween) River. Thanbyuzayat, ( Tin Shelter ), 30km South of Mawlamyaing was the western terminus of the infamous Burma-Siam Railway dubbed the “ Death Railway” by the thousand of Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and Asian Coolies who were forced by the Japanese military to build it.
